Where is Sapphire Point Overlook?
Sapphire Point Overlook sits between Breckenridge and Keystone along Swan Mountain Road. It’s a high-elevation viewpoint overlooking Dillon Reservoir with wide, open views of the Tenmile Range. The walk from the parking lot to the overlook is short and easy, which makes it one of the most accessible places to get married in Summit County.
If you’re planning a micro wedding in the mountains and want something with a big view without needing a long hike or remote drive, this location is a great option.
How do I reserve Sapphire Point Overlook for my wedding?
The overlook is reserved through Recreation.gov under the venue code VR22273. Instead of a traditional full day venue rental, you can book a three-hour time block. The overlook stays open to the public, but your reservation gives you permission to hold your ceremony there.
Do I need a wedding permit for Sapphire Point Overlook?
Yes! A permit is required to get married at this location. In this case, your wedding permit is the same thing as your reserved time slot. Click here to purchase your wedding permit for Sapphire Point Overlook!
How to reserve your date:
- Go to Recreation.gov
- Search “Sapphire Point Overlook” or use the venue ID
- Select your date
- Pick an available three-hour block
- Complete the reservation and save your confirmation
Time blocks fill up quickly—especially July through October—so booking early is important. You can reserve your date as far out as 6 months in advance.

How much does it cost to get married at Sapphire Point Overlook?
It costs $128 to reserve the ceremony site for 3 hours, including taxes and processing fees. Your reservation gives you access to the ceremony site for your three-hour window and permission to have your ceremony at this time. It doesn’t include chairs, decor, or any setup—Sapphire Point is intentionally simple, which is a big part of its appeal.
Please know that the trail will still be open to the public at the time of your reservation and does not guarantee exclusive use. Most people are respectful the moment they see a ceremony happening and give you space, but you technically can’t ask them to leave. So yes, Sapphire Point is a great intimate ceremony site tucked off the side of the trail, but it is not completely private and may not be for you if that’s important to you.
How to Plan a Sapphire Point Overlook Wedding
Even though Sapphire Point is easy to reserve, planning your day takes a little strategy. Here are the main things to think about:
Logistics to considers for your microwedding
- The trail to the overlook is short, but a bit rocky—you may want to change into your heels at the ceremony site before going down the aisle.
- Parking is very limited; plan to carpool or book a shuttle depending on your guest count. Your reservation includes 2 designated parking spaces.
- There is no indoor area or shelter, so it’s best to have a backup plan and flexible timeline to wait out any storms.
- Visitors may be walking by the overlook while you’re having your ceremony. Most people are quiet and respectful when they see a wedding happening, but just be aware you may have some excited spectators!
When is the best time to get married at Sapphire Point Overlook?
This answer entirely depends on the vibes you’re going for! Each season is beautiful in its own way, simultaneously coming with its own challenges.
- Summer: Expect warmer temperatures, more hours of daylight, potential for afternoon storms, and busier trails.
- Fall: Expect cooler temperatures, fall foliage, earlier sunset, and the potential for snow as we approach October.
- Winter: Expect cold temperatures, potentially icy roads or fresh snow storms, but less busy trails.
- Spring: Expect anything! Springtime in Colorado can be unpredictable—it may be 70 degrees and perfectly sunny or a whiteout blizzard in April.
No matter the season you choose, mornings and weekdays are usually less busy, which helps with parking and privacy.

Where to Take Your Wedding Portraits in Breckenridge
Sapphire Point has plenty of great places for portraits, all within a short walk from the main overlook. The trail wraps around the ridge with different angles of the lake, mountains, and tree line, so we can capture a wide variety of photos without needing to go far!
If you want to explore beyond the overlook, we can also head down toward Dillon Reservoir, stop at pull-offs along Swan Mountain Road, or visit a nearby trail for a little more adventure. Some couples love the idea of visiting multiple spots during their photography coverage, while others prefer to keep things simple and stay in one place.
The couple featured in this blog chose to stay at Sapphire Point because the views were exactly what they wanted and they preferred to spend most of their time with their family and friends. Either approach works and we can chat to see which is right for you!
