Why Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park?

Rocky Mountain National Park offers an unparalleled backdrop for your elopement with its majestic peaks, serene lakes, and active wildlife. The park’s varied landscapes—from lush meadows to towering alpine summits—provide endless possibilities for stunning wedding photos. An elopement in RMNP allows you to celebrate your love in a deeply personal and meaningful way, surrounded by the natural beauty of the Rockies. Whether you’re drawn to the peacefulness of a mountain lake or the grandeur of a mountain vista, RMNP has the perfect spot for your intimate ceremony.

Steps to Walk You Through How to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

To get married in RMNP, you must adhere to specific guidelines and obtain the necessary permits. No worries, I’m here to help you do so! All ceremonies, regardless of size, must be held at designated sites within the park, and a wedding ceremony permit is required. Here’s a step-by-step guide on how to elope in Rocky Mountain National Park:

Step 1: Choose a Designated Ceremony Site

Rocky Mountain National Park has several designated ceremony sites, each offering unique scenery and features. You must have your ceremony at one of these sites. Unfortunately, you aren’t allowed to have a ceremony anywhere you want to, but we can take photos throughout the park before or after.

Later in this post, we’ve detailed each site to help you find the perfect one for your elopement.

Step 2: Apply for a Wedding Ceremony Permit

All couples planning to get married in RMNP must apply for a wedding ceremony permit. Whether just the two of you are exchanging vows or having your friends and family join, you’ll need the permit. Do not have a ceremony without a permit. If you a ranger stops you and you don’t have a wedding permit, you and your vendors (photographer, officiant, etc.) will be asked to leave and receive a hefty fine.

The permit costs $300 and must be obtained in advance. The application process involves checking the availability of your desired date, completing the application form, and submitting the fee once your application has been approved. Permits are typically processed within 4-6 weeks.

You can read more about submitting your application here.

Step 3: Pay Park Entrance Fees

In addition to the wedding ceremony permit, each vehicle entering RMNP must pay an entrance fee. The current fee is $30 per vehicle for a one-day pass, $35 for a seven-day pass, or $70 for an annual pass. Make sure to inform your guests about these fees so they can plan accordingly. You can read more about the entrance fees and pre-purchase passes here.

Step 4: Plan Your Elopement Logistics

Consider the logistics of your elopement, including transportation, accommodations, and any additional activities you wish to include. We’ll provide more specific tips and recommendations for these aspects later in the guide. As an Estes Park elopement photographer, I help all my couples plan a detailed photo timeline to ensure the day not only runs smoothly, but that you get to spend it doing what you want to do.

Designated Ceremony Sites in Rocky Mountain National Park

3M Curve

3M Curve offers breathtaking panoramic views of Longs Peak, Estes Cone, and the Continental Divide. This site is ideal for intimate ceremonies and elopements, accommodating up to 15 people. Your wedding permit includes up to 3 vehicles at this site. You and your guests need to walk a short, unpaved trail to reach the overlook. It is accessible for most guests, but is rocky, so I suggest wearing good walking shoes. The trail is not plowed when it snows and there are no restrooms are available at the site, so you’ll need to plan accordingly!

Bear Lake Nature Trail

Bear Lake Nature Trail is a picturesque location surrounded by stunning mountain views and dense forest. The site accommodates up to 20 guests and allows for 5 vehicles. The trail to Bear Lake is paved and relatively easy, making it accessible for most guests. Restrooms are available at the trailhead. You should know, this is one of the most heavily trafficked areas in RMNP. Ceremonies are not allowed from the Friday before Memorial Day weekend through 2nd Tuesday of October and are never allowed on Saturdays or Sundays.

After your ceremony, you can easily pop over to the picturesque Moraine Park for stunning sunset photos amidst expansive meadows and breathtaking mountain views, making your special day even more memorable.

Upper Beaver Meadows

Upper Beaver Meadows offers expansive meadow views with a backdrop of the surrounding mountains. This site can accommodate up to 30 guests and has parking for up to 10 vehicles. The location is a short walk from the parking area, with no restrooms on-site. The open space and stunning scenery make it a versatile and beautiful choice for your elopement. However, this site is only open from mid-May through mid-October due to snowy conditions.

Sprague Lake

Sprague Lake is a beautiful, serene location with a dock extending over the water, providing perfect photo opportunities. This site can host up to 15 guests and 3 vehicles in the summer or 30 guests and 10 vehicles in the winter. The privacy and natural beauty of Hidden Valley make it an excellent choice for a romantic elopement.

Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater

Timber Creek Campground Amphitheater is located on the west side of RMNP near Grand Lake. This site offers a rustic and intimate setting with amphitheater-style seating and can accommodate up to 20 guests. The picnic area is a short walk from the parking lot and offers picnic tables, making it a convenient and picturesque spot for your elopement and a small post-ceremony celebration. Unfortunately, there are no restrooms here.

Lily Lake

Lily Lake is surrounded by lush vegetation and offers stunning views of Longs Peak. This site has three ceremony spots: the trail, south side picnic area, or the dock. The trail can host up to 20 guests, the south side picnic area can host up to 30 guests, and the dock up to 10 guests. There is a vehicle limit of 10 from the Friday before Memorial Day weekend through 2nd Tuesday of October.

The parking lot here is small, so I always recommend carpooling or utilizing a shuttle service if you have a larger party. The trail around the lake is a flat, easy loop, ensuring accessibility for all attendees. Restrooms are available at the trailhead, providing convenience for you and your guests.

Copeland Lake (Wild Basin Area)

Copeland Lake in the Wild Basin Area is a tranquil location with stunning views of Mount Meeker and Longs Peak. This site can accommodate up to 30 guests and allows for 10 vehicles. The lake is a short walk from the parking area, restrooms are available nearby. The serene lake and mountain views provide a perfect backdrop for an intimate elopement.

The dramatic scenery and soothing sound of rushing water make Alluvial Fan Bridge a captivating choice for your ceremony. You should know, this site is very busy during the summer!

Tips and Tricks on How to Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

Plan for the Weather

The weather in RMNP can be unpredictable, especially at higher elevations. Be prepared for sudden changes by bringing layers, waterproof clothing, and sturdy footwear. Check the weather forecast regularly as your elopement date approaches. Part of my job as an Estes Park elopement photographer is to stalk the weather for you!

Arrive Early

To avoid crowds and secure parking, plan to arrive early at your ceremony site. Weekdays and early mornings are generally less busy, providing a more intimate experience. During peak season (summer and fall), the line to get through the entrance station(s) can be up to an hour long. Typically early mornings (before 6:00am) and later afternoons (after 3:00pm) are less busy.

Respect Park Regulations

Follow all park regulations, including staying on designated trails and areas. This helps protect the park’s natural beauty and ensures a positive experience for all visitors. You can read more about the park’s rules and regulations here.

Obtain Your Permit

Your wedding ceremony permit allows you to have your ceremony at a designated site, but does not grant exclusive access. Your permit is your permission to say I do in RMNP! Please do not try to have a ceremony without your approved permit. A ranger may stop you at any time and ask to see your permit so be sure to have it on you! Otherwise, you may be asked to leave and even worse, fined.

Please be respectful of other visitors and consider exploring other areas of the park for additional photo opportunities after your ceremony. We still have to share the park with other visitors!

Additional Considerations For How To Elope in Rocky Mountain National Park

Getting Ready Locations

Since there are no bridal or groom suite’s in the park, you’ll need to consider where you will get ready before your ceremony. Here are a few options:

  • Romantic Riversong Inn: A charming bed and breakfast offering cozy rooms and beautiful, stream-side mountain views.
  • Estes Park Resort: Located on the shores of Lake Estes, this resort offers modern amenities and scenic surroundings, providing a luxurious and picturesque setting for getting ready.
  • The Stanley Hotel: This historic hotel combines elegant charm with breathtaking views, making it a perfect location for preparing for your elopement. The hotel’s classic ambiance and luxurious rooms ensure a memorable start to your day.
  • Airbnb or VRBO: Renting a cabin or home through Airbnb or VRBO offers a private and personalized space for getting ready. These options provide flexibility, beautiful settings, and the comforts of home, allowing you to create a cozy and unique preparation experience.

Cake and Champagne

Celebrate your elopement with a small cake and then signing your marriage license! Unfortunately, champagne is not allowed in the park – it’s glass and it’s alcohol! I know you see photos online of other people doing it, but you don’t want to risk getting a hefty fine for you and your vendors on your wedding day.

Here are a few ideas for spots to eat your cake in RMNP:

  • Sprague Lake Picnic Area: Enjoy a scenic spot with picnic tables and beautiful lake views.
  • Hidden Valley: Find a secluded spot with stunning mountain scenery.
  • Moraine Park: Set up a picnic in the wide-open meadows with panoramic views.

If you’re looking for a bakery in Estes Park, I highly recommend You Need Pie!

During peak months (summer and fall), RMNP will be crowded, and entrance stations may have long lines. It can vary every day, but I’ve waited in lines as long as an hour to get through an entrance station! Plan to arrive early, especially on weekends and holidays. Consider using the park’s shuttle service to avoid parking issues and reduce stress, and at the least I always recommend carpooling to use as few vehicles as possible.

Reception or Dinner Options

You can continue to celebrate your elopement with a small reception or dinner at one of these locations:

  • Twin Owls Steakhouse: Offering a rustic yet refined atmosphere, Twin Owls Steakhouse sets the stage for an unforgettable reception or dinner. Choose from a variety of dining spaces, including grand ballrooms and intimate private rooms, accommodating anywhere from 20 to 200 guests. Treat your loved ones to a culinary experience like no other, with gourmet cuisine and impeccable service that reflect the hotel’s storied past and timeless elegance.
  • Bird’s Nest: Nestled in the heart of Estes Park, Bird’s Nest offers a modern and chic atmosphere for your reception or dinner.
