Mount Falcon West Park

Mount Falcon West is my absolute favorite location for engagement photos in Northern Colorado! Nestled in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains in a town called Indian Hills, Mount Falcon is a diverse, mountainous location known for its spectacular golden hours and sweeping views! In this post, I’ll be sharing all about Katie and Jake’s gorgeous fall Mount Falcon engagement photos.

Meet The Couple

Meet Katie and Jake, a inseparable pair whose love story is as enchanting as the mountains themselves. High school sweethearts bonded by their shared love of Nordic culture, they embarked on a journey of adventure and romance that led them from the halls of academia to the cobblestone streets of old town Bergen, Norway, where Jake dropped to one knee and asked Katie to be his forever. How romantic is that?! As a nod to their love of Nordic culture and travel, Jake brought his authentic Icelandic wool coat to the session and wrapped Katie up when the sun dipped behind the mountains and the cool fall breeze set in. The love they share is radiant and I cannot wait to capture their fall wedding at The Manor House!

Tips For Planning Your Mount Falcon Engagement Session

  1. Check for Seasonal Road Closures: Before heading to the park, be sure to check for any seasonal road closures or trail restrictions that may affect your access to certain areas. Planning ahead will help you avoid any unexpected obstacles and ensure a smooth experience. You can check the park’s status here.
  2. Bring Layers: Colorado weather can be unpredictable, especially in the mountains, so it’s important to dress in layers and come prepared for changing conditions. Even on sunny days, temperatures can drop quickly as the sun sets, so be sure to bring warm clothing and outerwear to stay comfortable throughout your session. I recommend bringing a good pair of walking shoes too as the trail can be icy in the winter or muddy when it rains.
  3. Be Mindful of Road Conditions: The road to Mt Falcon Park West is unpaved and can be slick when it snows or rains, so exercise caution when driving to the park, especially during active weather patterns. Allow extra time for travel and be prepared for the road conditions!
  4. Start Early: To make the most of the natural light and capture the golden hour glow, plan to start your session about two hours prior to sunset. This will give you ample time to explore the park and capture a variety of stunning images before the sun dips below the horizon.

Mount Falcon Photography Permit

A photography permit is required for all professional sessions at Mount Falcon where compensation is provided. The park is located in Jefferson County, so your photographer will go through Jeff Co’s online system to obtain their permit. JeffCo is incredible to work with and the permit process is very easy!

HOW TO APPLY: You can apply for a Photography Permit through their online system here. After uploading your information and certificate of insurance, you’ll be prompted to check out and pay for your permit. You can submit your Other Commercial Activity Application here.

PERMIT COST: The annual permit is $125 per calendar year and the single session permit is $25 per session. Cost of Commercial Activity Permit varies.
