Amber and Bronson had their engagement session at two of my absolute favorite locations in Boulder: Lost Gulch Overlook and Chautauqua Park. These two spots, both located on Flagstaff Road, offer such unique and breathtaking backdrops for photos, and I LOVE them for engagement sessions. We took our own engagement photos here in 2021, so they hold a special place in my heart!
Amber & Bronson’s session was an absolute blast. They brought so much energy, fun, and thoughtfulness to their shoot. They thought of every detail and fun props and even had the cutest leather leash for their dog, which added such a nice touch to the photos.
Let’s take a look at their Chautauqua Park and Lost Gulch Overlook engagement photos and how you could make your session happen here, too!
The Sweet, Fun-Loving Couple
This was a two-hour couples session, and Amber and Bronson actually won a session giveaway I was doing for my business anniversary last year! We started with a Zoom call to get to know each other and discuss their vision. They wanted a casual, true-to-life outfit with their pup and a second fun, retro, colorful outfit. We chose these locations to fit their vibes and were dog-friendly, and we created a timeline to fit the locations
The session included both digital and 35 mm film photography. The couple LOVES trying new things and getting silly! So when they asked to try out a “film soup” technique on 35mm film, which they saw on Instagram, I was so excited! And it all turned out amazing!
Engagement Photos at Chautauqua Park
We kicked off the session at Chautauqua Park, one of Boulder’s most beloved outdoor destinations. With its iconic Flatirons backdrop, this park is a dream for engagement photos. The trails, lush greenery, and stunning views create an extraordinary setting. It’s perfect for couples who want a mix of natural beauty and easy accessibility.

For this part of the session, they chose a more casual look. Their white T-shirt and denim look was super authentic to them. They looked so good and stood out in front of the golden fields! I just love the playful, earthy vibes of their photos. And, of course, the handsome little dude Finn was there to steal the show!
Lost Gulch Overlook Engagement Photos
After capturing some beautiful moments at Chautauqua, we made our way up to Lost Gulch Overlook, just a 10-minute drive away. Perched atop Flagstaff Mountain, Lost Gulch offers panoramic views of Boulder and the surrounding mountains. The rugged rock formations and sweeping vistas provide a dramatic backdrop that’s perfect for engagement photos.

Amber and Bronson’s second outfit was a fun, retro look that brought a whole new vibe to the session. This is where we also tried the “film soup” technique, which added a whole new level to their already groovy Lost Gulch Overlook engagement photos! This playful, disco-inspired look against the dramatic mountain scenery of Lost Gulch was so unique!
Tips for Your Engagement Session in Boulder
If you’re also planning an engagement session in Boulder, CO, here are some things I’d recommend you keep in mind!
Have Proper Footwear: While you can easily explore Chautauqua without much hiking, I’d recommend bringing good shoes as there is a slightly steep incline on a dirt path you can take to explore further.
Consider an Outfit Change: This is not specific only to your engagement sessions in Boulder, but I do recommend bringing an outfit change! Changing your outfit adds layers to your session, and also you can achieve different vibes, making your gallery more fun and diverse!
Plan Your Timing: The sun dips behind the Flatirons at Chautauqua Park sooner than the actual sunset, so start your session here, then make your way up Flagstaff Rd to the overlooks with unobstructed mountain views and a later sunset. As your photographer, this is something I plan for!
Be Prepared: Bring water for you and your pups, sunscreen, bug spray, perhaps a quick snack, and some layers!
Mind the Road: Flagstaff Road is a bit windy and narrow; be ready if you get car sickness and just take it slow.
Parking: You can book parking ahead of time here. There are only 10-15 spots at Lost Gulch, so the parking lots fill up quickly. Weekdays are the best days for sessions here to avoid crowds. If the parking lot at Chautauqua Park is full, you can park on the street nearby and walk through the neighborhoods.
Bringing Your Pups: Both of these locations covered in the blog are dog-friendly, but they must be kept on a leash at all times. If you’re considering other locations, double-check that they are dog-friendly!
Permits: If you are capturing a session or ceremony in Boulder, Colorado, you are required to apply for the Boulder Open Space and Mountain Parks Photography Permit. Boulder OSMP is incredible to work with, and the permit process is very easy! The permit covers some of my favorite locations, such as Chautauqua Park, Lost Gulch Overlook, South Mesa Trailhead, Bald Mountain, NCAR Trail, Flagstaff Mountain, and many more.
You can apply through their online system here.
If you want to check out other locations for your session and you’re wondering about permits, I have a full blog post about it here!
