I know that as a photographer, you did not start your business because you love marketing. I know you didn’t go into this thinking, “I can’t wait to sell my services and talk about myself online.” But here’s the truth: marketing is essential for our businesses. I know the struggle of staring at your phone wondering what to post on Instagram and the looming fear that no one will book you if you don’t post consistently. That’s why I’m so passionate about sharing social media content ideas for photographers and the mindset shift that took me from dreading marketing to actually enjoying it.

The Mindset Shift That Changed My Social Media Content

So here’s the mindset shift that completely changed my own approach to marketing: Instead of thinking about marketing as selling, I now think of it as serving.

Whenever I’m creating social media content for my photography business, I’m not thinking, “How can I convince someone to hire me?” Instead, I’m asking, “How does this serve my couples? Why would they care about this? How will this piece of content help them in their journey, their wedding planning journey, or their season of engagement?”

This simple shift completely transformed how I approach my own social media content ideas as a wedding photographer—from something that felt self-centered, pushy, and a little icky to something that’s genuinely valuable, client-centered, and focused. Because my heart at the end of the day is truly just to help clients have the best wedding day of their lives and walk away with photos that make them feel amazing.

When I realized that’s all I have to talk about in my marketing, it completely shifted from something I hated doing to something I was surprisingly excited about. Now, creating content is my chance to literally talk to my dream couples and help them in their journey.

The Content Value Test for Photographer Social Media

So now, every piece of social media content that I create for my photography business, I run through what I call the Content Value Test. These are just three simple questions that I ask myself:

  1. How does this serve my couples or potential clients?
  2. Does this communicate my values and the experience that clients can expect when they work with me?
  3. Will this genuinely help someone who is planning their wedding?

If I can’t answer these questions, then I don’t create that content or better yet, I pivot and reshape it so it does answer those questions. It’s literally that simple.

Social Media Content Ideas for Photographers: Platform by Platform

Instagram: Strategic Content Ideas

I hear so often from photographers that I’m mentoring: “I don’t know what to post on Instagram. It’s been weeks since I’ve posted anything. I don’t know what to write in my captions.”

Whenever you think about Instagram, maybe there’s this pressure to create entertaining or dancing reels because they get more engagement, right? But my hot take is that you do not need to create these reels if that’s not authentically you.

I’ll be honest, yes, my account has seen the most growth whenever I’ve created reels, but your reels don’t have to be you dancing. Here are social media content ideas for photographers on Instagram:

  • Informative reels highlighting venues you’ve worked at
  • Planning tip carousels that solve problems for couples
  • Behind-the-scenes content from wedding days or engagement sessions
  • Client experience showcases that demonstrate your process
  • Vendor spotlights using the collaborative feature to expand your reach

I love the collaborative feature on Instagram posts. It’s absolute gold for supporting other vendors and expanding your reach. I always encourage you to invite vendors to your posts because it not only gives you a chance to share your work, it gives them a chance to share your work as well without even having to post.

Blogging: Content Ideas That Convert

If you were to ask me what is my favorite form of marketing, my brain immediately goes to blogging. This is because couples are actively searching on Google for their wedding photographer and also other wedding planning related things.

Blogging gives you a chance to create content that serves them right where they are in their planning journey. Here are some blog content ideas for photographers:

  • Venue guides for locations you’ve worked at
  • “What to wear” guides for engagement sessions
  • Wedding day preparation advice that showcases your expertise

This is not salesy at all. You are literally being that resource for them, answering their questions without having to pitch your services. You’re just helping them along in their journey and giving them valuable content that they’re going to remember, introducing yourself in a very natural way.

The key in creating your social media content is that it must come from a place of genuinely wanting to help your couples. Couples can absolutely tell the difference between generic, keyword-stuffed content versus content created with heart and intention.

When you create content with genuine intent to help them have the best day ever, it builds trust from the very beginning before they even inquire with you. They’re thinking, “Wow, she knows so much about eloping in Rocky Mountain National Park. That’s who we need!”

Pinterest: Untapped Social Media Potential

One of my other favorite platforms that I repurpose all of my blogs to is Pinterest. Please don’t sleep on Pinterest as a source of repurposing your social media content ideas!

Pinterest is another search engine where couples are actively looking for inspiration and information. It is more like Google than it is like Instagram. You can repurpose your blog posts to Pinterest and use keywords so that couples who are searching for inspiration will find your pins.

They literally can be saving your work to their Pinterest boards and creating their dream wedding with you in mind. Pinterest content ideas for photographers include:

  • Venue pin collections that showcase your work at specific locations
  • Planning guide pins that lead to your blog content
  • Seasonal wedding inspiration that couples are actively searching for

Pinterest is such a powerful tool to have in your marketing toolkit. You can not only have just another way for couples to find you exactly when they’re searching for what they’re searching for, but you can repurpose the content you’ve already created in your blogs.

Repurposing Social Media Content for Photographers

Content repurposing is absolutely a game changer for photographers. You do not need to create brand new social media content ideas for every single platform. Repurpose, repurpose, repurpose your content because you have to talk about it more than once in order to get in front of as many people as possible.

By distributing this content on multiple platforms, you’re getting in front of multiple different audiences who are searching for the same thing just in different places.

I love blogging so much because you put all of this work and effort into developing an incredible venue guide, for example. And then you can turn it into:

  • An Instagram carousel series
  • A reel that you can then repurpose into a TikTok video
  • A month-plus worth of Pinterest pins
  • Content for an email newsletter if you have one

You can also share the blog post with other vendors and repurpose it in so many ways to be networking and reaching a wider audience of people that would be searching for your services.

Authenticity: The Foundation of Your Social Media Strategy

As powerful as all of these social media content ideas for photographers are, the very most powerful piece of marketing advice that I can give you is to be authentic. The best marketing doesn’t have to feel like marketing at all. It just feels like you being you.

If you’ve heard this so many times and you’re like, “That’s so cliché! What does that mean?” Trust me, before I fully understood it, I was so annoyed too.

But to be authentic in your social media content, just share:

  • Your unique perspective on wedding photography
  • Your specific approach to the client experience
  • Why you do what you do in your specific way
  • Information you know that helps couples
  • Your real opinions or values that will align with your ideal clients

Couples who value the same things and want the same kind of wedding day are going to connect with your content and then inquire with you because they feel like you see them, you hear them, and that you are the photographer for them.

Authenticity is not just a buzzword; it is truly what sets you apart in a saturated market. No one else has your exact perspective, approach, or voice, and I just really want to encourage you to use that to your advantage. When you do this, the market no longer feels saturated because you are so clearly speaking to your dream people.

Brand Clarity: Essential Before Creating Social Media Content

Before diving into creating social media content ideas as a photographer, you need clarity on your brand, your values, and what you actually offer besides just “I take wedding photos.”

Without this foundation, you’re creating content without clarity that is speaking to everyone and not truly to your people, which is frustrating both because of the time it takes to create and because it’s not converting or resonating with the right people.

For example, I offer two-to-four-hour experience-based engagement sessions because that’s how I best create and connect with my couples. I found that it’s a better experience compared to a standard 60-minute session at one location with one outfit. There is no right or wrong approach here, but the key is knowing YOUR approach.

So I really want you to reflect on:

  • What makes your brand, your services, and you as a photographer different?
  • What is your unique selling point?
  • What do you value most in the wedding experience or your clients’ experience?
  • How do you work with couples that’s different from other photographers?

It’s simply not worth your time to create social media content that does not have a purpose and communicate your unique value to your dream clients.

Solving the Social Media Content Struggle for Photographers

The content creation struggle is very real. Through my own business and mentoring other photographers, one of the questions that I get asked most is “What do I post? How do I get people to book me without being salesy?”

I struggled so much with this in the beginning. I’d look at Instagram and think, “What do I post today?” I’d see other photographers posting consistently and just wonder, “How do they always know what to say?” It felt like I was hitting a creative roadblock over and over again.

Most of us get into this because we want to take photos, not because we love writing captions and marketing. But in order to be able to take photos, we need couples to know about us so they can find us and book us to take their photos.

But content creation got way less scary and so much easier whenever I started running everything through the Content Value Test. The floodgates of creative social media content ideas for photographers burst open. All I had to do was just talk about what I’m passionate about, what I know helps people, and it no longer felt like this creative rut or frustrating process.

Introducing: The Annual Content Calendar for Wedding Photographers

This is exactly why I created my annual content calendar with social media content ideas for photographers. Instead of generic prompts, I’ve designed guided questions that help you discover and express your unique voice and approach.

The content calendar includes:

  • 144 Instagram prompts (3 posts per week for a full year)
  • 24 blog post topics that couples are actively searching for
  • Seasonal organization to keep your content timely and relevant
  • Suggested caption outlines to get you started

Each prompt helps you clarify your distinct perspective on essential topics like your client experience, planning wedding details, timeline management, vendor collaboration, and how you approach engagement sessions. What makes this calendar special is that no two photographers will create identical content while using it—your authentic voice shines through.

My goal is to help you get unstuck, gain brand clarity, and never run out of content ideas again. The best part? You can repurpose your blog content for Instagram and vice versa, maximizing your marketing efforts.

If you’re ready to start creating content, you can get the annual content calendar for wedding photographers today for just $22 with code CHERRY, instead of the regular $27. Thank you so much for tuning into this episode of The Sundae Best!

If you take nothing else away, please remember that every piece of content is an opportunity to serve your dream clients.
