Trying to decide what to wear for your engagement photos?

Your engagement session is not just a photoshoot; it’s a celebration of your love and the beginning of your forever! Amidst all the excitement, comes the planning and I know one of the first questions you have after scheduling your engagement photos is, “what should we wear?”. As a Colorado wedding photographer, this is a question I answer almost daily so I decided to put it all into a blog post for you to help you figure out what to wear for your engagement session!

Whether you’re reading this as one of my couples or because you came across this on the internet, my hope is that this guide will ease your stress and get you excited to finalize all the details of your engagement session outfits! Your outfits should reflect your personal style while complementing the stunning natural surroundings. From flowing dresses to bold accessories, let’s delve into the world of engagement session fashion and discover how you can elevate your photo session to a whole new level of chic.

Embrace Fashion and Personal Style

There are two approaches to choosing your outfits – dressing like you do everyday or dressing up more than you usually would because being engaged is truly an occasion to celebrate! If I’m your photographer, you can have both. Most of my couples bring at least 2 outfits (a casual option and fancy option) to their session along with accessories and layers. It’s better to bring something and not need it, than to need it and not bring it.

Consider incorporating textures, flowy long dresses/skirts with lots of movement, bright and bold pops of color, subtle patterns on main clothing pieces (shirts, skirts, dresses), and statement accessories into your outfits. From leather jackets to Louboutins, cowboy hats to cat eye sunglasses, and intricate details, let your wardrobe choices reflect your unique personalities and don’t be afraid to make a bold statement. I fully support you.

If you aren’t sure where to start with choosing your outfits, I always recommend starting on Pinterest. You can dig through my account for inspiration, save what you love to your personal board, or search the location for your engagement photos and see what other couples have worn there!

Your Engagement Session Outfits Should Make Sense For The Scene We Are Creating

Just as characters in movies are carefully styled to fit the scene and mood of each moment, your outfits for your engagement session should also make sense for the activity and environment you’ll be in. Consider the setting of your photoshoot and choose outfits that complement the mood and ambiance of the location and the vibes that you’re going for. Whether you’re strolling through a sunlit meadow, cuddling up by a cozy fireplace, or exploring the rugged beauty of the mountains, your outfits should reflect the spirit of the moment and enhance the overall narrative of your love story. Opt for attire that allows you to move freely and comfortably, whether you’re hiking through the wilderness or dancing under the stars. By selecting outfits that are both stylish and practical, you’ll not only look amazing in your photos but also feel completely at ease and immersed in the magic of the moment.

Look how my cute couple changed and repurposed their outfits at each location!

For Andy and Martha’s engagement session, we did it all. We started with a cozy game of scrabble in their refurbished blue camper, Birdie in their casual jean outfits and slippers! Then, headed to downtown Longmont to explore and strut their stuff on the streets. They changed into a few different outfits to be more functional for riding their vintage bikes vs wandering through the library aisles. Their outfits were adorable in every location and made perfect sense for the scene – functionally and visually!

Choosing Your Casual Outfit

When it comes to selecting a casual outfit for your engagement session, aim for a look that embodies comfort, ease, and a touch of laid-back charm. Think of it as an opportunity to showcase your everyday style while embracing the natural beauty of your surroundings. For women, options abound, ranging from relaxed denim paired with a breezy blouse to a playful sun dress that captures the carefree spirit of the occasion. Consider slipping into a pair of cute short jean overalls for a playful and youthful vibe, or opt for a Canadian tuxedo ensemble with denim-on-denim for a classic yet effortlessly cool look. For men, channel a relaxed vibe with a well-worn pair of blue jeans paired with a simple t-shirt or plaid button-down shirt. Alternatively, embrace the rugged charm of the mountains by going barefoot in your favorite denim and a cozy sweater or solid color tee, allowing you to feel connected to nature as you celebrate your love story. Whatever your choice, a casual outfit for your engagement session allows you to feel at ease and authentically yourselves, resulting in photos that capture the genuine joy and intimacy of your relationship.

I always recommend starting in your more casual outfit as you’re getting comfortable together in front of my camera! When I say a casual outfit, I’m referring to an outfit that you would wear in everyday life! Prioritize functional outfits that allow you to move comfortably and freely during your engagement session, ensuring that you can fully enjoy the experience without feeling restricted. We’ll be moving around lots – playing tag in a field, piggy back rides, walking hand in hand across the lakeshore, etc. Be sure to try your outfits on weeks ahead of time to make sure everything fits and is comfortable when you’re sitting, standing, bending over, and moving around.

Choosing Your Fancy Outfit

This is where your inner fashionista comes to life. Think of your session as an opportunity to showcase your style in a way that feels elevated and glamorous. Consider outfits that exude sophistication and elegance, while still reflecting your personal taste and personality. For women, a flowing maxi dress in a luxurious fabric like silk or chiffon can create a stunning silhouette, especially when paired with statement jewelry and heels. A bold, long flowing dress is always a stunner against the Rocky Mountains. Alternatively, a chic cocktail dress with intricate lace detailing, a large scale bow, or embellishments can add a touch of drama and romance to your photos. A classic white mid-length dress is always a winner for downtown engagement photos. For men, a tailored suit in a classic color like navy or charcoal is always a timeless choice, paired with polished dress shoes and a stylish tie or bowtie. Another option is to embrace a more casual yet refined look with a blazer paired with tailored trousers and a crisp button-down shirt. Whatever your style preferences, choosing to include a fancier outfit for your engagement session allows you to celebrate this special occasion in style and create photos that are as elegant and memorable as your love story.

Tips For Choosing Your Engagement Session Outfits

Coordinate, Don’t Match

Instead of matching outfits, aim to coordinate your looks. Coordinate your color palette and style choices to create a cohesive aesthetic that fit together harmoniously with one another and the environment. Matching outfits (think same exact color or pattern) can appear forced and unnatural in photos, while coordinated outfits allow each of your personalities to shine through. The colors that you wear will be predominant in your photos, so make suer you love them! If one of you has a dress or a top with a subtle pattern, the other may choose to wear a solid dress or top in a color from that pattern! Otherwise, think about the color wheel and what colors compliment one another. I definitely recommend trying your outfits on side by side weeks before your session to make sure you love how they look not just on one of you, but together.

P.s. if wearing matching t-shirts from your favorite band is your thing, then please by all means DO IT! In fact, I encourage it. These tips are not to discourage you from wearing what your heart desires, but rather to provide some perspective from a photographer on what typically photographs the best. At the end of they day, what you feel best in is the best option! I love when my couples throw in their favorite matching Jerseys for some personality pics!

Choose subtle patterns, solid colors, and various textures

incorporating subtle patterns, solid colors, and various textures can add depth and visual interest to your photos. Subtle patterns, such as delicate florals or understated stripes, can add a whimsical touch without overwhelming the overall look. Solid colors, on the other hand, provide a clean and timeless aesthetic, allowing the focus to remain on you and your fiancé(e). Experiment with different textures, such as lace, velvet, leather, or knits, to add dimension and richness to your outfits, creating visual intrigue and tactile appeal. Whether it’s a silky blouse paired with tailored trousers or a cozy sweater layered over a flowing skirt, mixing and matching patterns, colors, and textures allows you to create outfits that are dynamic and multifaceted.

Dress For The Environment You’ll Be In

Above all else, please prioritize being comfortable for your session! Being comfortable doesn’t mean sacrificing a cute outfit – it means being prepared! Preparing for the unpredictable weather of Colorado during your engagement photoshoot is essential for ensuring a comfortable and enjoyable experience in every season.

What To Wear For Your Engagement Session in Each of Colorado’s Seasons

In spring and summer, be prepared for sudden rain showers or intense sun by packing essentials such as umbrellas, sunscreen, and plenty of water to stay hydrated. Additionally, lightweight layers like a denim jacket or shawl can provide warmth during cooler evenings or unexpected breezes. As fall approaches, embrace the crisp mountain air by bringing along cozy sweaters, scarves, and jackets to stay warm amidst the changing leaves. In winter, prepare for snow and cold temperatures with insulated coats, hats, gloves, and hand warmers to keep you cozy during outdoor shoots.

For hiking engagement sessions, consider the altitude and its potential effects on your body, such as shortness of breath or fatigue. Take breaks as needed, stay hydrated, and be mindful of any altitude-related symptoms. Remember to pack essentials like snacks, a first aid kit, and a fully charged phone for safety. By planning ahead and packing accordingly, you’ll be ready to embrace the beauty of Colorado’s diverse landscapes and create stunning engagement photos in any season!

I provide outfit and gear recommendations to my couples based on the season and location and always say “it’s better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it”. If you are spending your engagement session in the mountains, I definitely recommend wearing comfortable hiking gear as long as you can and then changing into your outfit/shoes at the photo spot! Here are a few essentials to consider for your outdoor engagement session:

  • Hiking or walking shoes and good socks – waterproof is best
  • LAYERS – jacket, rain coat, hat, gloves, socks, scarves, etc.
  • Hand or feet warmers – for cold sessions you’ll want to keep your extremities extra warm
  • Backpack – to carry all your supplies
  • Water and snacks – to stay hydrated and not hungry
  • Sunscreen and bug spray – depending on how long and when you are outside

Don’t Forget To Do These Things Before Your Colorado Engagement Session

Don’t forget to attend to the final touches that will elevate your look to perfection. Get your jewelry cleaned to ensure it sparkles in the sunlight, and treat yourself to a fresh manicure to showcase your ring in all its glory. Pay attention to grooming details like highlights, haircuts and beard trims for a polished and put-together appearance. By taking care of these final touches, you’ll be ready to step in front of the camera with confidence and radiance!

Embrace Color Theory With House of Colour

Hot Take: I don’t believe “neutrals” are always best.

When planning your engagement session outfits, it’s tempting to gravitate towards neutral tones for their timeless appeal. Don’t get me wrong, I love a classic neutral palette and have captured many beautiful neutral engagement sessions! However, embracing color theory can take your photos to the next level and inject them with vibrancy and personality. Not sure what Color Theory is? Let me introduce you to House of Colour. House of Colour, a renowned expert in color analysis, emphasizes the transformative power of color in enhancing your natural beauty and expressing your individuality. Instead of shying away from bold hues, consider how strategic color choices can elevate your engagement photos and make them truly unforgettable.

At House of Colour, consultants work with clients to identify their unique color palette based on skin tone, eye color, and hair shade. By understanding which colors complement your natural features, you can create outfits that enhance your appearance and radiate confidence in front of the camera. Whether it’s a striking jewel tone that brings out the warmth in your complexion or a soft pastel that accentuates your eyes, House of Colour helps you discover the colors that make you look and feel your best. Every HOC season has neutrals, but you’ll be shocked to learn that black is only best for 1 in 4 people!

Contrary to popular belief, neutrals aren’t always the best choice for everyone for engagement photos. While they may seem safe and versatile, they can sometimes blend into the background and lack the visual impact needed to stand out in photos. Instead, consider incorporating pops of color that complement your natural features, reflect your personality and add visual interest to your photos. From vibrant reds and lush greens to electric blues and sunny yellows, don’t be afraid to experiment with color and let your personality shine through.

By embracing color theory and working with experts like House of Colour, you can create engagement photos that are as unique and vibrant as your love. Explore the endless possibilities of color and discover how it can transform your photos from ordinary to extraordinary. Whether you’re opting for bold statement pieces or subtle accents, let color be your guide in creating engagement photos that are as beautiful and as they are memorable.

If you’re in Denver, I highly recommend seeing Heather Hope to find out what your best colors are! Fun fact: I’m a HOC Spring and getting my color analysis done was life changing! Feel free to ask me about it.

Plus, once you know your color season, you can shop at MyEllement boutique where items are verified by consultants so you can know you’re buying your best colors!

What Your Dog Should Wear To Your Engagement Photos

Including your furry friend in your engagement session can add an extra layer of love and joy to your photos, but it’s important to prepare ahead to ensure a smooth and stress-free experience for both you and your pup.

When selecting a collar and leash for your dog, opt for aesthetically pleasing options that complement your outfits and the overall theme of your engagement session. Look for stylish collars, leashes, and bandanas that showcase your dog’s personality while adding a pop of color or pattern to your photos. Additionally, pack backup supplies like tide sticks to tackle any unexpected messes or muddy paws and a lint roller for any fur that sticks to you after family hugs!

Hire a Professional Pet Attendant to Provide the Best Care for your Pups

I encourage you to consider hiring a professional pet attendant from businesses like Plus The Pups or Pets of Honor to care for your dog during the session. While asking a friend or family member may seem convenient, professional pet attendants are trained to handle pets in various situations and can focus solely on ensuring your dog’s comfort and safety throughout the shoot. This also allows you to relax for your photos, knowing your pup is in the best hands possible!

Essentials to Bring For Your Pup

Be sure to bring along essentials for your dog, such as water, snacks, and toys to keep them entertained and hydrated. Keep in mind leash laws and etiquette, as most areas require dogs to be on leash and for owners to clean up after them. Prepare for the weather by bringing booties for your dog’s feet in the snow and plenty of water to keep them cool in the heat.

For dog-friendly engagement session locations in Northern Colorado, consider picturesque spots like Horsetooth Reservoir, Old Town Square in Fort Collins, Carter Lake, Boyd Lake State Park, Poudre River Trail, Spring Canyon Park in Fort Collins, Chautauqua Park in Boulder and Estes Park Lake. With careful planning and preparation, including your dog in your engagement session can be a memorable and joyful experience for everyone involved.
